Courtyard Quilt Along – Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of the Courtyard Quilt Along! This week we’re sewing the blocks.

Week 3: Sewing The Blocks

Once the curved piecing is done, the blocks go together really fast. At this stage they are in essence a large nine-patch block.

First, determine your wide sashing and cornerstones. If you’re doing the scrappy version, mix and match as you choose from the leftover fat quarters. If you’re doing a more controlled version, you’ll know what you’re using so you can cut them all at once. The size to cut your 4 wide sashing and 1 cornerstone per block is in the pattern.

The pictures below show the stages of sewing the blocks. Rinse and repeat until you’ve made the number of blocks your size calls for.

Four curved units sewn. When laying out your blocks, be careful to have all the small arcs on the four outside corners of the blocks. It’s easy to get them turned around. Pay attention to color placement if you are grouping colors together. If you going totally scrappy then you don’t need to worry about this. But we like some control even in a scrappy quilt, so we group the small arcs and the large arcs together.

Sew together like a nine-patch block. Press toward the sashing so the units nest together when joining the rows.
