The Ribbon Quilt

Did you know 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in October 1985. Its original goal was to promote early detection through mammography. In the early 1990s, the pink ribbon became the official symbol of the movement, popularized by Estée Lauder and Self magazine. Since then, the campaign has grown into a global effort each October, raising awareness, supporting research, and encouraging education and screenings to fight breast cancer.

To commemorate the event, we created The Ribbon Quilt, an easy pieced wall hanging or throw size quilt. The wall hanging is a beautiful tribute to the cancer survivor in your life, while the throw size is perfect to comfort your loved one while going through treatment. The quilt is simply pieced using 2-1/2″ strips for the throw and 1-1/2″ strips for the wall hanging.

We have also had plenty of customer reach out and ask us if they can make this for a fundraiser, of course, it is a resounding YES!

Since the 1990s, many other types of cancers have adopted a ribbon color to signify their cancer. A chart of these common types of cancers and their ribbon colors is included inside the pattern so you can personalize your quilt.

The Ribbon Quilt – 60″ x 76″
Grab 16 fat quarters of pinks (or lots of scraps at least 2-1/2″ wide) and 1 yard of solid for the ribbon to make the breast cancer quilt.

The Ribbon Quilt – Wall Hanging – 30″ x 38″
14 fat eighths in the color of your choice and 3/8 for the ribbon is what you need for the wall hanging size. Make sure they are at least 1-1/2″ wide.

The #SewPink Initiative’s mission is to raise awareness for cancer throughout the year.

Efforts culminate in an annual blog hop during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote self-care, awareness, early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer.
