FYI: It’s free to sign up for the newsletter, but you’ll need to purchase your Newport Sails pattern, template set (optional) and fabrics to make the quilt.

Newport Sails is the very first Everyday Curve pattern we made. It’s so fun and summery! That curved sail and the gentle waves set this apart from other sailboat quilts.

We chose it for this quilt along because it’s a great introduction to all the things the Everyday Curve template set can do. You’ll learn how to cut and piece the sails and the waves, which each have their own attributes. Plus those adorable boats! Who can resist those? And if you don’t sail yourself, you probably know someone who would does who would love this quilt!

Quilt Info and Supplies

First, purchase the pattern here. You have the choice of getting the booklet version or the pdf download. There are template diagrams included in the pattern you can use to make your own paper or plastic templates. However, since this pattern was written, we came out with the Everyday Curve Template Set that makes cutting so much more accurate and easier than making your own, we strongly recommend you get it. (We have 12 additional patterns that use the template set so it’s not a one-and-done purchase.)

Fabric: Anything goes with fabric selection! Nautical themes are an obvious, fun choice and batiks are so painterly, they really give movement and interest to the quilt – not to mention how beautiful they are! If you have a playful side, novelty fabrics can really make the sails so unexpected! Go to our Newport Sails Web Extras page for more inspiration.

Cover Quilt: The cover quilt was made with those fun nautical-looking stripes and textured blue skies and waves from Ruby Star Society. If you want to recreate the cover quilt, we have kits! You can get all the fabric to make the top exactly as shown with binding or just the stripes if you want to use different sky and waves. We have limited supplies of the kits so if you want one, hurry! They will go fast.

  1. I would like to do this but I am a bit concerned it may be too hard, can you tell me how would you rate this? Easy, intermediate, hard?
    Thank you for your assistance
    Joyce

  2. I apologize I just left a question but did not identify the quilt pattern I was asking about. I am interested in doing the sew along for Newport Sails and questioned what is the challenge level? I assume not easy but not sure if its considered intermediate or hard?
    Thank you,
    Joyc

    1. Hi Joyce, Good question! We consider this an intermediate pattern only because of the curved piecing. That being said, the curves are very gentle and go together easily. We’ll have step-by-step videos and q&a sessions throughout the quilt along to help you out when you need it. We think you’ll be surprised how well it comes together. Hope to see you join us!

  3. Already have pattern and fabrics, just need the rulers to make cutting easier. I want to do the sew along, as it will help me get the project done sooner,. I just ordered the curved rulers from you, just hope I get them within a week or two so I don’t fall behind in your building of the quilt.
Can you verify for me that I am on you list to be part of the sew along?
I’m thrilled that someone found this for me, it will probably save my life, and make the recipient very happy.

    1. Hi Eugenia, You should get the templates quickly, we’re filling orders daily. And the first week is more of an organizing week, so you won’t really need to cut until Week 2. I checked the database and you are not on the list. Click or copy/paste this link: https://landing.mailerlite.com/webforms/landing/y0i4q3 and it will take you to the signup. After you sign up, check your email for more information and to make sure you are signed up. We’re looking forward to having you join us and to see your beautiful Newport Sails quilt!
