Quilt Info and Supplies

First, purchase the pattern here. You have the choice of getting the booklet version or the pdf download. That’s it! Nothing else to purchase to participate!

For your fabric choices, anything goes! You can use predominantly one fabric line or you can mix and match your favorites. Add in solids if you choose to make your prints stretch or keep it wild with all prints. There really is no wrong fabric choice with this quilt! In the yardage requirements, you’ll notice there are two different widths: the 1/2 yard cut yields 3 hexagons plus the partial hexagons on the top and bottom of the quilt; the 1/3 yard cut yields 6 full hexagons. The partial hexagons on the sides will come from both.

As far as selvages, the original quilt uses selvages with a few solids sprinkled in, but there are options. You can use a striped fabric, a fabric with a linear design that maybe isn’t a true stripe, piece the stripes or just use a fabric that will stand out. If you are using yardage, the amount you need depends on how the stripe runs. If the stripe runs down the bolt (most common, the stripe runs endlessly down the length of the bolt), you’ll need 1 yard. If the stripe runs across the bolt (stripes run selvage to selvage), you’ll need 1-1/4 yard.

If you’re paralyzed with choice, we’ll post inspiration photos of lots of fabric lines you can choose from. And follow the hashtag #WanderQAL2021 to see what others are doing – this will be fabulous inspiration!

We are making our own versions along with you! Trisch is making hers in Color Theory by Carrie Bloomston and Jenifer is using Tula Pink True Colors for hers.

Wander is a large throw – 58″ x 57″. For this size you need:

  • 1/2 yard of 3 different prints
  • 1/3 yard of 5 different prints
  • 1/4 yard of 5-6 solids (this is if you want to add solids to your selvages, or you want to piece your stripes)
  • 1/2 yard for binding
  • A collection of selvages, striped fabric or coordinating fabric to piece the stripes
  • Marking tool – chalk recommended

Tentative Schedule

Week 1 – Piecing Selvages or Stripes. We’ll learn how to get the most bang out of the selvages you’ve been saving for the perfect project! If you don’t save selvages, no worries, we’ll talk about piecing fabric to make the stripe effect.
Week 2 – Cutting Hexis these aren’t your ordinary hexis, these are jumbo-sized!
Week 3 – Sewing. We’ll show you how to sew perfect Y-seams – there’s nothing to be scared of!
Week 4 – Quilting. We’ll show you several ideas for quilting your top yourself or to take to your quilter.
