Bohemian Born Row-of-the-Month Quilt Along

We’re hosting a Bohemian Born Row-of-the-Month Quilt Along ,and we want you to join us!

Month 1

How it works: The first Monday of each month starting Sept. 2, 2024, you’ll get a reminder email with a link to the QAL post. This will be our regular newsletter – no special signups are necessary. (If you don’t already subscribe to our newsletter, click here to sign up.) Each month’s post will include that month’s assignment plus video tutorials, cutting help, tips and hints.

The year-long quilt along starts in September 2024, but you can jump in anytime – all you need is the Bohemian Born pattern and the Everyday Curve and Everyday Curve Jr. template sets. We will step you through the whole quilt every month with plenty of opportunity to share your journey with others and to ask us questions – almost like we’re there with you in your studio helping you every step of the way!

Connect and Brag About Your Progress!

Post your progress on our Facebook group Everyday Stitches Quilt Alongs. This group is dedicated to all our quilt alongs. That is the place to post your progress and ask questions. If you are an Instagram user, post on your page and use the hashtag #BohoBornQAL and @everydaystitches so we can find you! Each month we’ll have live events on Facebook and Instagram – and maybe some prize giveaways too!

About the Quilt

Bohemian Born in Kaffe Fassett fabric

Bohemian Born is a show-stopping color explosion! Although it looks like a complex pattern, it really is easy enough for the confident beginner. And the more experienced quilter will love how easy we’ve made the curve piecing with our Everyday Curve Templates

The quilt is created one row a month. The rows are made of either 12 small blocks or 8 large blocks. Much of the sewing is repetitive, but there are some changes along the way to keep it interesting. And don’t let that applique intimidate you! We have a fool-proof technique to show you. Or leave the appliqué off completely – the quilt will be fabulous either way!

All you need to participate is the Bohemian Born pattern and the two Template Sets. And of course the fabric!

Fabric Selection

The quilt is made of 15 prints + binding. There are a few ways to approach fabric selection for this quilt.

  1. Use the fabric requirements listed on the back of the pattern and pick your own combination. The fabrics correspond to specific placement in the quilt and is outlined in the cutting instruction on pages 8-9 of the pattern. See “Choosing Your Own Fabrics” below for more on that.
  2. Choose your fabric row by row. This gives you more freedom in fabric placement and you can use more or fewer fabrics than the 15 recommended on the pattern. For this option, we have a requirement and cutting chart for each row that tells you how much to get for each month. Click here to access this spreadsheet. Scroll down and click “Monthly Cutting Chart” to access the spreadsheet. Each month shows the fabric number that corresponds to placement in the quilt and how much to cut for each row.
  3. Use our pre-determined fabrics for five different quilts – pick your favorite and recreate it as shown. See the “Need Help with Fabric Selection” section below for more on this and to see the quilts.

Choosing Your Own Fabrics

If you want to go with the fabric requirements as shown on the back of the pattern, keep these tips in mind.

Almost any “busy print” fabric line will work – including batiks. Even solids work great and will give your quilt a truly modern aesthetic.

Don’t be intimidated by big, bold, busy prints. Look at the overall color of the print, not individual colors it contains – you want the prints to “read as” the color you are looking for. For example, if the color is navy, find a print that when looked at from a distance looks mostly navy, even though it has other colors in it. It’s the variation in colors contained in the prints that make this quilt sparkle!

Look for a mix of warm (red, orange, yellow) and cool (blue, green, purple) colors; busy prints and calmer prints; and have a range of lights, mediums, and darks. The harmony of these will make the quilt feel balanced and pleasing to look at.

Don’t forget contrast, especially within a row. In general, you want to use a lighter color next to a darker color. There are times when this is harder to do, and that’s ok. Not every block needs to  pop. Some can take backseat to the ones that sparkle.

A blank swatch chart and coloring sheet to plan your quilt are on pages 6-7 of the pattern, or Click here to download them.

Need Help with Fabric Selection?

We have the fabric requirements to recreate these five quilts:

These are made of basics, meaning they will be available for many years. If some go out of print, you can substitute with something similar to get the same effect. If you want to recreate one of them, access our Web Extras here. Scroll down to get to the “Swatch Charts with SKUS and Yardage” section to get the color charts and fabric recommendations.

Note: The Grace by Valori Wells version, top right, is not a basic line, so get it now! When it’s gone, it’s gone.

We Have Kits!

If you want to make the exact cover quilt using the same Kaffe Fassett fabrics, we have kits! It includes all the Kaffe Fassett fabrics you need to make the top, plus binding. You provide batting and backing.

Kits available:
Fabric = $200
Fabric + Book = $220
Fabric + Book + both Template Sets= $275

Come join the fun and let’s make Bohemian Born together!

  1. May l just buy the pattern and a paper version of the templets to put on cardstock? I have enough scraps to make one. I’m really wanting to do this!!

    1. We don’t offer paper versions of the templates. Both the original set and junior set are needed. We do have 18 other patterns that use the templates though, so you can make more with them than just this one quilt.
