Bohemian Born Quilt Along: Month 1

Welcome to the Bohemian Born Quilt Along! We’re so glad you’re here! Before we start Row 1, let’s get some housekeeping things out of the way.

How do I get the monthly assignment? Right here on the blog! The blog post will go live on the first Monday of each month until Sept. 2025 with that month’s assignment. Either set a reminder to go to the blog, or you will get a reminder in our regular newsletter each first Monday with the link to get here. (Click here to sign up for our newsletter if you don’t already get it.)

How do I ask Trisch and Jenifer a question? The best way is on our Facebook group, Everyday Stitches Quilt Alongs. Chances are if you have a question, someone else has the same question so don’t be shy, ask there!

We also will do an Instagram Live and a Facebook Live each month. IG Live will be the first Thursday of the month after the assignment goes live and the FB Live will be two weeks later. You can ask questions there as well.

September Lives
IG Live: Sept. 5, 10 a.m. CST @everydaystitches
FB Live: Sept. 19, 10 a.m. CST Everyday Stitches

How do I connect with other quilters making the Boho quilt? Again, the Facebook group is the best place for this! Post your process shots, your finished blocks, anything you want to share! Everyone is supportive and kind. We know we are all at different stages in our quilting, so this is the place to get the advice of more experienced quilters!

Alternatively if you prefer Instagram, you can post your progress there. Use #BohoBornQAL and @everydaystitches so we can find you.

I’m just finding your Quilt Along. Where do I get the pattern and templates? Click here to purchase the pattern, and click here for the templates.

I need help choosing fabric! Click here to read about how to choose your fabric. And don’t forget we have kits to make the version shown on the cover of the pattern using Kaffe Fassett basics. Click here to get the kit.

What is the Mini Challenge? Each month, we’ll have a mini challenge. This is simply a fun way to get to know each other. This month, the challenge is to show us your stack of fabrics for your Boho quilt and tell us what drew you to those fabrics. Post on the Facebook group or Instagram with hashtag #BohoBornQAL and tag us @everydaystitches.

Month 1 Assignment

This month is all about Row 1. It’s one of the easiest rows, which is a perfect way to start!

Row 1 instructions are found on page 16 of the Bohemian Born pattern.

Here’s what Row 1 entails:
1. Cutting (or gathering if you precut) the rectangles and squares.
2. Cutting the curves.
3. Piecing the Background/Arch units.
4. Piecing the Triangles.
5. Piecing and trimming the blocks.
6. Assembling the row.

NOTE: We strongly suggest you make a practice block with scrap fabric before you cut into your good fabric, especially if you are new to cutting and piecing curves. I know we’re all excited to get started, but honestly, do this. You’ll thank yourself later!

Fabric Cutting

Supplies needed:
Row 1 Fabric (See Important Fabric Info below.)
The Original (Large) Template Set

The fabric is first cut into rectangles and squares, then the curves are cut using the Original (Large) template set when we’re ready to sew.

Important Fabric Info
If you have all 15 fabrics for your quilt, you have two cutting options.

  1. Cut all your fabric now using the instructions on pages 8-9 of your pattern (This is the recommended option). Label each cut with the Fabric Number, Row Number, and Description (LA, LB, etc.) and keep organized for future months. Do not do the additional curve cutting now. You will do that for each row as we get there.
  2. OR cut all of Fabric 1, Fabric 2, and Fabric 3 now, not just what is needed for Row 1, and leave the rest to cut as we go. Label each cut, as above, with the Fabric Number, Row Number, and Description (LA, LB, etc.) and set aside the pieces used in other rows. Organization is important so you don’t lose track of your cut and uncut fabric.

If you choose your fabric row-by-row, for Row 1, you need:
Fabric 1 – 14″ x wof (width of fabric)
Fabric 2 – 3″ x wof
Fabric 3 – 15″ x wof

The fabric numbers correspond to the numbers on the diagram on page 9 of your pattern. Cut your rectangles and squares according to the dimensions given in the first column under “Gather the Pre-Cut Fabric” on page 16.

Organization
We’ve found a 14″x 14″x 3″ plastic craft box is the perfect size for this project, but use what you have on hand if you don’t have this size craft box.

Label everything carefully by using stickers or pinning a piece of paper on each stack with the information on it. You’ll thank yourself later!

Once you’ve determined your cutting style and organizational system we can get on to the fun stuff!

Making Row 1

Row 1 is made of 8 large Blocks with Triangles.

Step-by-step instructions to make the row are on page 16 of the pattern.

Each step takes you through detailed instructions with diagrams to make each section of the blocks. If you need additional help, we have video tutorials for every step. You can access those below and on our YouTube channel. You can subscribe to our channel while you’re there so you don’t miss any of our video tutorials.

Next Month – Row 2

Next month we’ll make some small blocks with the triangle unit and appliqué! Don’t fear the appliqué, we have a great method that will make perfect circles!

Until October, we’ll see you on FB and IG!
